Long Live the Underdog

BusterMany thanks to everyone who has written to say they enjoyed HITLESS WONDER, and thanks, too, for sharing your stories with me. I’ve heard from lots and lots of musicians and bands who have been there/done that in the dive bar trenches. Turns out there are a whole bunch of grinders like us out there. We’re not the grand champeens. We’re the also-rans, the tomato cans. We’re the honorable mentions, the others-receiving-votes. But as my friend Scott Pleasant likes to say, “Rock and roll ain’t about the Generals. It’s about the foot soldiers.” Amen, brother. Now, in 2013, let’s take that motherf-ing hill.

  1. I just finished the book on my commute home today. Although not being previously familiar with Watershed has my indie-cred confidence feeling low today. So I bought Brick and Mortar to make myself feel better.

  2. Joe, Tom from Florida. Like you I teach college (Pharmacy Law). I’m both a pharmacist and lawyer, but most importantly, I’m a guitar picker!!! Laughed my a__ off reading your book, God doesn’t this stuff happen to everybody that turns the amp button up to 10!! Thanks for turning me onto your tunes, I’m gonna start making selections from your catalog. Also, we need more live kicka– bands in S. Florida, get your butts down here for some gigs !!! Peace Out !

Thanks, man. We once played in Ft. Lauderdale at an Irish bar. Dismal gig. Great time. Hope all is well teaching Pharmacy Law. I bet that Celebrex case makes for a good study.

Found the book at the library. Couldn’t put it down — I recognized lots of it. I have an MFA from Arkansas. And a band, too. I rode in a van for half of the year 2000 with rockabilly guy Sleepy LaBeef. I kept a little journal. I need to write the book. Thanks for showing me it could be done, hilariously, and well-written.

Two more things. The first CBGB gig story was my favorite. And I’m so glad that you love Slim Dunlap’s solo albums! OK, that’s enough outta me.
